New Shinkai Makoto projects make me excited.

Yesterday, at a Japanese press conference (linked below) and actually slightly before when the film’s website went live… Shinkai Makoto’s new project Suzume no Tojimari (Suzume’s Locked Doors, actual English title is TBC) was officially announced.

The initial visual is so very Shinkai-esque and the film’s official website summarises the story (translated by me…):

Seventeen year old Suzume lives in a quiet town in Kyūshū. She meets a young man who is travelling who says he is ‘looking for a door’.

She follows him and finds an old door in ruins in the mountains, left behind after a collapse.

Drawn to something, she reaches for the door.

However, as doors begin to appear and open across Japan, disasters are promised to follow from beyond. So Suzume must begin her journey to close them.

The poster is beautiful, a mix of the ruins of humanity contrasted by a normal-looking but obviously magical door. The art is beautiful and I’m excited to see a full trailer. For now, though, we have the official press conference which was posted on YouTube yesterday.
